This can be done while the tire is still on the car so its a good idea to keep a patch kit in your vehicle at all times especially if you won't be close to any sort of help. So if you do get a flat out in the middle of nowhere, you can fix it yourself.
Also, a can of fix a flat will work to fill the tire back up for you so you can get to where it is you're going.

The 3rd product is a kit that you just plug onto your tire and it inserts and and Slime tire sealant into your tire fixing it and inflating it in 7 minutes flat. So if you're afraid to try the plug method this is the solution for you. It claims to plug a hole from inside up to 1/4 inch, which is what the plug kit does too.
